Things to Consider before Buying a Survival Knife

If I say, You have to choose only one survival tool within thousands for your next trip then what your preference would be? I’ll choose a survival knife because of its functionality and multi-purpose uses. A survival knife is a must-have tool for any expeditions.

In this post, we are writing about 6 most important things that you need to consider in the time of buying a survival knife.

1. Tang: Tang is the portion of the blade that goes down into the handle. The blade is the most solid part of a handle. If the blade goes down entirely to the handle that should be the most durable survival knife. The handle of a knife is made of fiber or plastic; it can give a better grip. But it can’t hold the blade without the tang. The knife built with full tang ensures durability and strength. I always prefer a full tang survival knife.

2. Handle: Handle ensures comfortability when you are playing with the knife. The knife handle differs from polymer to fiber or rubber. Choose a knife with a handle that you can grip with ease. Try to avoid extra feature on the handle. As hollow handle knives don’t have a full tang, try to avoid them also.

3. Blade Material: A product lifespan depends upon the material, This is especially true for a survival knife.
Blade of a survival knife falls into two types of steel. Stainless steel and Carbon steel. Stainless steel is collusion free and lasts longer but sharpening a stainless steel knife is a little tougher.
On the other hand, Carbon steel knives are available with a sharper edge. But the downside it’ll rust faster. Choose any which you are comfortable with.

4. Blade Design: This is the most debatable question for a survival knife. There is an abundant number of knife designs like the straight blade, drop point, clip point and many more. This depends upon personal preference. Choose any one which you like most and comfortable with.

5. Blade Length and Thickness: The majority of the survival knives fall into 6 to 12 inches. This size is perfect for any survival situation. Bigger than that would be a hindrance to carry in the backcountry.
For blade thickness, the general rule is about 3/16 -4/16 of an inch thickness. A survival knife of that size is extremely solid and can withstand the utmost wood chopping and any praying.

6. Sheath: If you are carrying a sharp knife then you have to be concerned about your safety. That's why a sheath comes to solve the problem. A sheath is a holster to carry your knife. It also helps to protect the sharp edges of the knife and also keeps the knife rust free.

Tip: Try to keep a knife sharpener in your sheath

These are the main factor behind the best survival knife. Now get outdoors and enjoy your trip, All the best.
